Washington DC Weekend

Washington DC Weekend

Last week I flew out to D.C. to visit my high school friend, Rachel. I always love catching up with Rach as she is my “adventure” friend. Always traveling, always on the move, and always having a fun time. A little over a year ago she moved to D.C. to start a new job. I had never spent time in our nation’s capital, so a few texts as “Hey. Do you mind if I sleep on your couch while you play my tour guide?” had me quickly booking an airplane ticket for a Washington DC Weekend.

All of my travels, so far this year, have been what I would deem a “Girl’s Trip”. Like my vacation back in June to celebrate a friend’s bachelorette party and then later in the summer, a quick journey to Michigan for said friend’s wedding!

The first stop for Rachel and I, was the only place I told her on my “must see” list while in DC, the Arlington National Cemetery.

My personal belief has been that Arlington needed to be at the top of my list, because without it and the sacrifices of those who lay in it’s hallowed ground, there would be no U.S. capital to explore.

I realized I was right, from the moment the Changing of the Guard Ceremony commenced at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Taps played out over the hill.

A powerful moment to be sure.

Rachel and I then traveled to Georgetown for a quick lunch and of course a cupcake for dessert, before continuing on into DC to see what it had to offer.

We started on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which overlooks much of the Mall area.

And then tucked off to the side of the Lincoln Memorial is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. With its powerful and personal representation of the sacrifices of so many.

Followed by the peaceful serenity of the World War Two Memorial.

And with our home state pillar!

Followed by a trip past the White House onto a round or two at a local happy hour in downtown DC.

(Alright it was three rounds at happy hour. But who really counts the number of happy hour drinks?)

We ended up walking back to the car just after the sun had set and was able to see the monuments start to come to life from the darkness.

Washington DC was such a fun and special place to see. Especially with this girl by my side.

Thanks again Rachel for being a top notch tour guide, gracious hostess, and even better friend!
