Scheuring Family Reunion

August 21, 2017 by My Farmhouse Table 2 Comments

Scheuring Family Reunion

Yesterday my aunt and uncle hosted a Scheuring Family Reunion at their house. It had been years since one was put on, so of course the time was spent fawning over the new family additions (boyfriends/grilfriends, spouses, children, grandchildren, etc). But also it was a time to remember those family members we have lost as well. My aunt and uncle live on the original Scheuring homestead. They recently painted the whole outside of their early 1900 farmhouse, a major undertaking, and wanted to use the occasion to bring everyone in to see it.

Of course there was plenty of food. Crockpots of maid rites, pork loin, chicken and ham. Dishes of casseroles, garden bounty, and side salads. And a long table with an array of desserts to share. If you go home hungry, you are not doing a family reunion right. Obviously I did it right, since I skipped a pic of the food spread in order to fully commit to my overly filled plate of delicious food.

A photo from a 1970’s Scheuring Family Reunion had recently been found, so it was undertaken to try and recreate that picture. It took a few tries and directing, but everyone looking at the camera and eyes open I consider a win!

Of course there was some goofing around in the process.

And the addition of a few other members of the family.

At least Lisa was paying attention to my candid shots. I think Sara is wondering why Chris has a plate full of walnuts.

I’m incredibly blessed that in my job I have the I’m incredibly blessed that in my job I have the opportunity to meet and get to know many different groups of people from every walk of life, but occasionally… there are certain ones who find a special place in your heart.

A gentleman I’ve been working with sent met copies of this in the mail yesterday and to say I (ugly) cried is probably an understatement.

I’m not one to push politics (especially on social media) but all I want to say is this is why history matters. Your not going to find this sort of thing written in text books… but it is in the hearts and minds of a generation quickly fading away.

What is happening in the world is not just ā€œnewsā€. These are people’s lives. See the pain and affect this sort of war still has on a generation 75 plus years later.

Context:
Picture 1- Poem written by my clients grandfather sometime after his son (client’s father) was KIA in WWII. The line that got me was… ā€œIt is just a sweet memory that chants the refrain… I’m glad I touched shoulders with you.ā€ 😭 I think if you have ever lost someone dear to you… you can understand that line ā¤ļø

Picture 2-3- Note from client to me on a copy of his dad’s obituary. I think it’s easy to sense how this sort of loss had an affect on multiple generations of a family.

Buy yourself the flowers. Light the ā€˜good’ ca Buy yourself the flowers.

Light the ā€˜good’ candle.

Put on a spritz of your favorite perfume, not because you are going out, but because it makes you feel special.

Open the expensive bottle of wine that you’ve been saving for the ā€˜perfect’ occasion, and drink it for no particular reason at all.

Stop saying ā€œwe need to get togetherā€ to a dear friend and then never actually making plans.
Leave your sweatpants on, messy bun in, and just BE with each other. Curl up on the couch with their dogs, kids, etc and enjoy some leftover Chinese food while catching up on your favorite shows.

Life is messy and real.
Stop living FOR the perfect and just LIVE.
Don’t wait.
Make the memories WITHIN the mess.

That’s the mindset I’m trying to live in these days, and you know what?

I’m happier for it! ā¤ļø
