Homemade Dinner Rolls

Homemade Dinner Rolls

Thanks to my many years in 4-H and exhibiting at my county fair, I’ve had plenty of experience making various types and kinds of bread. From French loaves to butter braids, and sourdough. I’ve made it all. But this recipe for Homemade Dinner Rolls always holds a special place in my heart. As well as a special place on my family’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter tables.

The key to this recipe (and any soft bread dough) is milk.

It helps to enrich the dough and make it perfectly fluffy and delicious.

Start by heating the milk.

I find the easiest way to do this is by placing the milk in a small saucepan and heating it on the stove over medium heat. Stir occasionally, until tiny bubbles form around the edges of the pan and the milk begins to steam.

Pour the heated milk into a mixing bowl.

Add water, butter, and sugar.

Let the liquid cool until you dip a finger in and it feels like a warm bath. Not too hot. Not too cold. Just right.

Then stir in your yeast.

Add the egg, salt, and flour.

Mix and knead until the flour is incorporated and the dough becomes a soft and smooth ball.

Let the dough rise for about an hour.

Divide the dough and roll into balls, placing onto a greased pan to rise for about another 45 minutes or until doubled.

Bake the rolls until golden brown. Butter the tops as soon as they come out of the oven.

Watch these disappear in no time. Especially if you serve them with my famous honey butter!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Butter, softened or melted
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 4 1/4 – 4 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 Tbsp Butter, melted For Brushing Rolls

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat. Stir occasionally until tiny bubbles form around the edges of the pan and the milk begins to steam.

  2. Pour the milk into a large mixing bowl. Add in the water, butter, and sugar. Stir to combine. Let the mixture cool until warm to the touch. (Similar to warm bath water- not too hot or cold).

  3. Stir in the yeast and let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes until it begins to foam.

  4. Next, add the egg, and salt. Stir to combine, begin adding the flour, one cup at a time. Mix and knead the dough until it is soft and smooth.

  5. Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm spot for about an hour or until doubled.

  6. When dough has risen, punch it down and turn out onto a lightly floured counter. Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces (you can do 12 pieces if you want larger rolls). Form and roll each piece into a round ball and place onto a greased baking sheet, spacing about 1/2 inch apart.

  7. Cover the rolls. Let them rise until doubled- About 45 minutes. The rolls should be very puffy with the sides beginning to touch.

  8. Bake at 375℉ for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and immediately brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter.
